Character Name: Terra (Tara Markov)
Canon: Teen Titans (Animated/Teen Titans GO! comics)
Canon Point: Post' Titan Rising', mid 'Betrayl'; The starting point of her being a traitor, where she had become a full Titan as well as joined forces with Slade to infiltrate their ranks. The Titans are as of yet not aware of her treachery or alliance with Slade. She wears her Titans outfit and has yet to go on her date with Beast Boy
Personality: Terra is basically your everyday, average, normal, angsty teen girl with a great sense of humour. She’s rather insecure about a lot of things to do with herself, but mostly her lack of control over her geologically based powers. She’s a big eater, doesn’t mind getting dirty, plucky, reckless, and a lot of fun to be around. She’s rather unladylike, however, and could be described as a tomboy with a secret penchant for girly things. Terra has a tenancy to get overemotional as well, which makes her lack of control over her powers act out even more. She puts up a good shield of confidence for others she isn’t close with, however, in fear of people finding out how unstable she is and sending her away.
She was raised as a princess in her home kingdom but never enjoyed having who she should be and what she should do. This branded her as a hardheaded child, and she continues to be. She is stubborn, reckless and quicker to believe in her own power than anyone else's after training with Slade and being accepted as a Titan. She is ambitious and goes after what she wants relentlessly. She struggles to find the person she really is. It has always confused her and is her greatest struggle in life. It causes her to make poor choices based only on whether she'll be accepted or gain positive attention. She seeks validation in all of her relationships, but will speak her mind without second thought of the repercussions. She would much rather smash before asking questions and has a competitive, cocky nature. She likes to show off with her powers, even more so after, again, her secret training with Slade.
Terra was a nomad, afraid to stay in one place too long. Her powers and far too unstable and the mishaps with them just didn’t seem to stop, thus why she left her home - The fear of harming her loved ones with her instability. It took her all over the world, and in her path she left a myriad of freak natural disasters. She fears becoming close with people but longs to, afraid they will reject her as a 'freak' and a danger if they were to learn about her powers. The only thing she longs for more than acceptance and belonging is to be in control of her powers. She does not wish to cause anyone harm but will do it anyway if it is for the greater good. This behavior created a lot of turmoil between her and the Titans, as she betrayed and attempted to sacrifice them all in an attempt to become in control of her powers. Though she is good at putting up a front of remorselessness while doing so, she felt a lot of guilt and took responsibility for her atrocities by sacrificing herself.
Terra does not believe in herself or see any good in herself. She tries to fake it, but her walls come down when left alone with herself or someone she trusts unconditionally. If something is bothering her, she does her best to pretend it doesn't exist, such as her past with her family and kingdom. She only tends to deal with issues when she can no longer ignore them. She does not value herself all that much, especially after hurting her friends so deeply. She does not live for anything but the aspiration of being normal, but knows this is not possible. She always tries her best to help but becomes less earnest about it with each misshap with her powers.
Terra has a tendency of identifying herself deeply to items that remind her of the few times she has ever truly felt happy, yet leaving such items behind or destroying them as she moves on from a place. Since she lives in caves and other crevices outdoors, she travels light. The one item she has consistently carried with her is a butterfly hairpin, presumably given to her as a child. She does not seem to care much for the way she looks, instead utilizing the item as a sort of pacifier when she becomes distraught.
Upon meeting the Titans, however, she felt her luck was beginning to change for the better. Her happiness was becoming more genuine, and she began to feel comfortable with (most of) the Titans members as friends. Most especially Beast Boy, whom she had begun to have romantic feelings for. His support, kindness and puppy love made her softer, more amicable, more willing to talk to people. It helped her to reach out to the other Titans and befriend them, leaving her more vulnerable than she had ever been, which lead Robin to figure out through the way she acted that there was an issue with her control. Beast Boy had given her a confidence she didn't know was possible within her, and her private world opened her just a little. She shared with him the details of her past, which normally if they came to mind she'd shrug the topic off and move on. She also found herself able to convey her emotions to him on a meaningful level, which no one had ever really taken the time to listen to or care for. He made her feel special, and as though she mattered. She has a tendency to look to him for affirmation when something or someone makes her feel upset or uneasy. After Robin was able to deduce that she did not have full control of her powers, she assumed Beast Boy had told him and felt betrayed. In turn, she became the betrayer. She was deeply hurt by her first love, and as every teenage girl in this situation would, she reacted badly. It made her feel as though she was wrong to trust him, never should have, and was now looked down upon by all those she had begun to call her friends.
Her relationships with the other Titans ranged from hot and cold between all of the members. Everyone received her in very different ways, and she was adept to it, doing her best to stay on everyone's good sides. In the beginning, she did her best not to let them close while remaining friendly, but soon found herself changed by them for the better. She began to communicate her emotions and wants with them the way friends normally do, and felt useful being a part of a team that helped people. She began to gain more confidence about herself and her powers, but was prone to getting even more upset than she had used to about meltdowns with her powers. Her personality clashed with Raven a lot and the two appeared to dislike each other for a long time, but over a span of time had begun to consider each other friends. They are both very competitive and cold with each other, but when they speak their true feelings to each other they seem to have a fondness for each other. She got along very well with Cyborg due to his similarities with his best friend Beast Boy, but never really grew to be more than pals with him. Robin saw her as a friend and an ally, attempting to offer her support, but she felt patronized by him and intimidated by his skills and leadership abilities. When it came to Starfire, she and Terra got along remarkably well and Terra was more or less open to her overly friendly personality (though her touchy-feeliness made her rather uncomfortable) as well as her strange culture and customs.
She saw Slade as the only one who would accept her and turned to him to get herself under control, being so mentally fragile - feeling like she hadn't a friend in the world - that she was willing to do anything just to feel accepted by him. She looked up to him in a twisted battered daughter way, hoping that he would be able to refine her and make her feel valued and needed, only having partial knowledge of the costs. His manipulations turned her callous and unfeeling, him having tricked her into thinking the Titans had only faked liking her and regarded her as a freak and dangerous. After a long time, she began to see the mistakes in joining forces with him and her aspirations of full control were completely smashed with the suit he had encased her inside. Though she tried not to care for her friends, the more she saw them suffer the worse the guilt began to weigh on her. When the Titans teamed up to take her down remorselessly, she felt even more isolated than she had before. She ran back to her source of acceptance, instead being tormented in a slurry of physical and verbal abuse. This, combined with her growing conscience pushed her to her breaking point, but it was once again the support of Beast Boy that helped her to see all the wrongs she had committed and a way to stop them. She sacrificed herself to save everyone from the final point of Slade's plan, accepting the high probability of her death in the process. However, a while later she was inadvertently revived.
Her memory and powers had seemed to have been wiped, and she began living life as a normal school girl, happier than she had ever been. Though Beast Boy had tried to get her back to her old self, she couldn't remember a thing and ultimately gave up for her happiness.
